The Atacama Desert stretches about 600 miles, with a land area of about 40,000 feet, from the southern Peruvian border through much of northern Chile. It is known as the driest desert in the world, and in some regions rain has never falled in recorded history. When rain occasionally does touch down, the desert is covered in bright pink blossoms.
